77 clutch and flywheel , pull engine?

I need to replace the clutch and resurface the flywheel, is it easier to pull the engine or remove Bell housing in place and remove flywheel. I don’t have
a side belt pulley.

Thanks

I have done them both ways, it is easier to pull the engine provided you have a hoist that can pick it up, but it is quicker to do it in place. The hard part about in place is maneuvering the bell housing and the flywheel in/out of the tub.

I think doing it by removing the bell housing is easier, no need to drain and remove radiator, can take a bit of finesse to turn the bell housing just right but with gas tank removed it is pretty easy.

to answer your question, "easier" is to pull engine they are out in no time and saves talking chinese and finger squashing and head banging.

To make the job a little easier take two fine threaded 7/16 inch bolts and cut the heads off. Screw them into the crankshaft. It will make it easier to remove and install the flywheel. Also center punch of the alignment dowel pins on the end and mark the hole it goes in on the pilot bearing hub. They are off set a little bit but I have seen them forced on incorrectly. The torque for the 7/16 inch flywheel bolts is 72 pounds. Any questions? We used to go out to the farmers and put clutches in there farm buildings without removing engine. J.
