7710 trans fork

Neighbor came to me with a reverse fork problem in his 7710. Seems it has broken, he has the part, but apparently he needs to do a rear split to change it. One guy at the dealer said no, another guy said yes to the rear split. Equipped with cab. Do we need to do anything special to the PTO or anything else to do the rear split at the diff housing, like pull the PTO first? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Have the trans cover off, and the link out, but can"t get the fork out.

No worries about the PTO, just split and roll. More caution is required when rolling back together to make sure all is aligned correctly...
Anything you do in the transmission on a 77 will require a split.

Got it together, but the last 1/4 inch was very difficult to get there. Had studs and bolts holding things in line so alignment would be optimized. Neighbor is finishing it up, but I have a gut feeling that there will be a PTO problem when he gets it ready to test run it. Will a PTO repair be possible through the PTO access thru the rear housing, or will a "re-split" be imminent?

Neighbor finished up his 7710 reare split for trans fork, as we feared- No PTO. Gonna split it back apart this weekend. Local dealer claims we shouldn't be having this problem, given the precautions we took the first time.... we only split it 3", with three dowels threaded in to keep things aligned- one on each side and one in the bottom, slid it back together rolling it from the rear tires on both sides, it went back together by hand save for the last 1/8 inch, and we pulled that in with bolts... dealer claims at 1/8, we should have been well past any source of problems. When we get it apart, will let you know what broke.
