Need to extend the welder outlet in my tractor barn ........

The old 8/2 type SE had a braided wire/fabric covering which was the ground/neutral conductor for a three blade receptacle. Now an 8/2 wG type SE is a black covered wire with three stranded conductors. When did this happen? - I missed the memo ........

What's it marked? Gray outdoor jacket 8-8-8 SEU with three alum - two stranded blacks and bare strands wrapped for ground - is still common here. Sounds like you got Romex or UF instead.

The SE stands for service entrance, so it is basically a generic entrance wire term with radical departure (as discussed in the link) I think the woven third conductor has been gone for a while (I've not seen it in 15 years except in NOS at a old hardware store. Jim

Probably a good thing that they don't use that woven outer jacket for a ground. Had to cut and twist it to use it and then it lost its strength and won't fit the cable clamps very well. I can see where it allowed for poor connections. I suppose the electrical supply store may have some.
