8 N over heating problems

My 8N is over heating pretty easy , can I remove the thermostat and it be ok ? Mainly it does this when I try to bush hog , I have just realized there is no fan shroud , could that be the problem ? I am running a 50/50 antifreeze from Wallmart

Are you sure it is overheating or is it just over filled? The last time one of mine overheated, the fan belt was loose. Have you cleaned the radiator lately. If the thermostat was not opening, it would overheat every time you ran it. Major cause of overheating is the radiator being overfilled.

tom, like mr. geiger says, overfilling is most commonly the cause of this. i made this same mistake when i got my N. i didn't know you're only supposed to fill the radiator until the core (the stuff u can see looking into the fill neck) is just covered. any more, and when the tractor warms up, the coolant expands and forces the extra out.

on a related note, i was still convinced, even after i learned how to fill the radiator, that it was running hot. i finally got around to installing a temp gauge i've had laying around. turns out it never runs hotter than 160

i might switch to a 180

Do NOT remove the t-stat. That's not your problem. See tips 24, 25 and 35.

The shroud is most helpful when the tractor is stationary and moving slwly.

Thermostat would only cause overheating if it were defective (sticking or not fully opening).

Fan shroud helps to direct air flow through the radiator core but its absence is not causing engine to overheat.

If you aren't overfilling and belt is properly tightened. Pull the thermostat and see if it makes a difference in coolant temp.

Yes i have seen no T stat , gutted T stats , and hot T stats work for different reasons . Usually overheating on an n is because the radiator fins are externally clogged ( dirt / leaves ) or the internal tubes are plugged with rust . A $15 inferred temp gauge will allow you to point the red dot had see which tubes are flowing and which are clogged along with any other hot spots on the motor . The rust in the block is probably half way up the welch plug . Most of the coolant passage holes between the head and block , around the #4 exhaust are probably sealed shut from mineral deposits .

I have flushed them out with clean water and added CLR lime and rust remover to the coolant . Run the snot out of her for fifteen minutes and you will have a brown milkshake to drain . Caution hot caustic acid exploding in your face will burn for days . I usually wear a welding glove , place a large folded towel over the radiator cap with the water hose running to keep it cool and wet , then take off the cap .

Flush the system and do it again .Some people like vinegar , Just my opinion , your scars may look similar to mine , but they are cheaper than some of these goofy Tattoo's I am seeing these days .
