8 volt battery

Has anyone had experience using an 8 volt battery in the 8N without changing the voltage regulator? The tractor starts easily, runs extremely well, but the battery will not stay charged. Flow from the generator is about 9-10 amps (I do not have a very good ammeter) and when the tractor is running the voltage across the battery is about 10 volts.

8 volt battery is more trouble than it is worth, fix your 6 volt charging system or convert to 12 volts. When running a 6 volt should see about 7.4 volts. If you show 10 volts from a 6 volt generator then you have problems and are doing damage to battery.

Generally not a good idea unless you have mastered the mostly long lost art of VR adjustment.

That said, 10V should charge your 8V battery.

8 volt battery is a band aid fix for other problems. Plus when was the last time you saw a battery charger that had an 8 volt setting on it?? Go with 6 volts or convert to 12 and be done with it

Sounds to me like you have either a bad v/r or a bad meter. If it is indeed charging at 10v, that would explain why your 6v battery won't stay charged.....you've probably overcharged it.

You can put an 8v battery in it & it will charge fine off of the 10v (assuming it really is 10v). But, if you have a front coil, that extra current will shorten its life considerably. And, again assuming the charge rate is 10v, you already have evidence that the v/r is bad.

As others have said, I'd clean all the grounds, check the v/r, replace the battery cables & either convert it to 12v or get it back to 6v. That 8v battery is going to burn up your points & lights &, and your frontmount coil as well.

I purchased an 8N that had an 8 volt battery once. Lasted about two months before it discharged. Replaced it with a 6 volt and never looked back. Would never consider an 8 volt again.
