8 Volt Charger

As it comes up every now and then, there was some talk about charging 8 volt batteries. And I have an 8 volt in a Case 300B (long story came that way when I got it0. So, I had a chinese charger on it but the problem there was when the power failed the charger would start back up in 12 volt mode which the 8 volt battery did not like.

Anyway, I found a different 8/12 volt charger on Amazon and this one starts back up in 8 Volt mode if left in 8 volt mode which is a bit nicer to the battery. I thought this may be of interest to 8 volt battery owners.

It's been a very long time ago, so if I remember right.
I had a farm tractor, that had a 6 volt system in it, when I had it over hauled, it would not turn over very well. I put an 8 volt battery in it and the 6 volt system kept the 8 volt battery well charged.

I had the same issue with a VAC. Came with 8v battery and started great. BUt the battey would only last a year. The guy I bought it from had no issues, BUT they used it to run a Case cutter and it ran wide open for that. That usage gave enough volts to clear the battery plates (don't ask me what that means, but I was told my running it most of the time at half throttle was what did in the battery. I have the exact same charger now. After a day of using the tractor i put the charger on and all has been good. I leave the leads mounted on the battery and just plug in the pig tail. For the little it cost, I am quite happy with the solution.

My Dad has run 8 Volt batteries in different tractors over a number of years. He's never had an issue charging them with 12 Volts on or off the tractors, a bit of a wonderment to me. No premature battery deaths either.

I just found out that they are people on here that don't like that
It's one thing if you want your tractor to be all original. I've changed all my 6 Volt tractors to 12 V. It's a great improvement, still using the 6 V. starters in place. No issues for over 30 years.

If you’re a purist and want the tractor to remain just like it came from the factory, then you have to stick with 6v. Even running a 8v battery wouldn’t be factory correct.

You can even get 12v generators if you are worrying about stock appearance, but I’d just throw a Delco alternator on there and call it a day.

Good to know that an 8 volt charger is available for the low low price of $15 .70 delivered. That has got to benefit anybody with a 8 volt battery . I didn't know there was such a thing as an 8 volt charger.

This is an old Marquette 6-8 volt charger. No 12 volt.It will spin over a 41 Caddy flathead V-8 with a nearly dead battery.

Back in the '60s when I start working on stuff at Dad's shop, there were several 8v cars/trucks around. Quick fix for slow starting equipment, Would overcome Poor connections, worn starters etc. Had to adjust the original regulator up to 8v+ to charge correctly. If jump needed, just use 12.

It's just half the heighth of the pump. The leads are heavy, like good quality jumper cables. They are on two spring loaded retractors and go through two holes in the back.
