Hi, I am restoring an 860 and wondered if anyone has any info/photos of the way the upper bolts for the grill thread into. Hard to explain but the wing nut like bolts thread into someting that the previous owner did not leave in place and I would like to see what I should do to fix/restore. Thanks

Dan;

There should be two tabs on the dog legs of the side panels. They receive the wing bolts. If new dog legs were put on they won't have the tabs. For some reason after market makers don't put them on. Give me a few and I'll get a picture for you.

Here's a couple of pictures.

Glen, Excellent image. That part is definitely not there. I have a 6 sided hole about 1" in dia. Do those pieces bolt on? Thanks, Looks like you are moving along with painting. Hope to get some time and warm weather together to do the same.

Dan,
You are missing those round extensions you see in Glen's photo. The opposite end the extension has the hex flats to fit inside the 6 sided hole that you see on your hood. This prevents the extension from turning when you screw the wing headed bolts in. The extensions have a flange that is peened over once it has been inserted into the 6 sided hole. I don't see any way to remove the extension without destroying the flange. If you can find a junk hood to get the extensions off of you would need to cut the metal tab off and weld it onto your hood panel. I think you could probably braze the extensions to your tabs if you had to destroy the peened over flange to remove them from a junk hood.

To help me understand, you have a six sided hole? If you have that then you have the tab. The round nut was designed with a six sided surface on the back to fit that hole and I believe it was a press fit. You can look for some old tin that still has the nuts and remove them for your tractor or you can weld a nut in place unless. If you weld it, try to match the depth so your wing bolts will reach.

The tabs(as I call them) were welded on. They actually for a connect between the upper side panel and dog legs. I replaced my dog legs and cut the tabs free and welded them back to the new ones. The grill then ties the hood assembly together.

I was finally able to do some work on it yesterday. Got it running and found at idle I had pegged the oil pressure gauge. The gauge was new (chinese made). Put the old one on and it was at 35 at idle and 45-50 at higher rpms. Fearing my old gauge may not be accurate I bought a new gauge and it read the same as the old one. Ended up cleaning and painting the old Stewart-Warner gauge and will use it. Next step will be installing the tin and then the loader. Post some pics of your tractor when you can. Have fun!

I just cut the doglegs from a hood that I'm shipping out. One dogleg is rough but all 4 of the captive nuts are there. Shoot me an email if you want some good original nuts to install.

Thank You all!!!! I will get a chance to look things over this weekend, and now I know what I should have had and can figure out the proper solution.
