800 Timing

I bought a 57 800 gas and have been restoring it the last couple of years. Finishing bolting everything up and reading how to time it in the manual. The book says there are timing marks on the flywheel that you can see through the timing hole but I can not find any. Brought #1 up on top dead center but don"t see any marks. Is it really necessary or can you get it close enough by ear.

Make sure that the engine is on the compression stroke.

You will probably need to clean the flywheel to find the marks. I use a small brush and gasoline while the engine is running to preclean the flywheel. Then stop the engine with the marks visible in the hole and thoroughly clean with brush and gasoline. Finally, use a model, brush and white paint to mark the 4 degree BTDC mark.

No one cah time an engine by ear.

Thanks for the help. I was worried that I might of got the flywheel on wrong but the book says it only goes on one way. I have cleaned on the flywheel but just can"t find any marks. I will work my way around it and hope they are on there somewhere.

ust below the hydraulic pump & connecting lines (see them?).

Look where JMOR said. The hole has a cover over it which may be hidden under crud. Clean the area and you will see it.
