800 versatile tractor electrical

Does anyone know the standard voltage of a 1st series versatile 800 with the 855 cummins. I thought it was standard 12 volt with a neg ground. Started hooking up the two new batts that way and it's not right. had a manual but can't find right now and need to get running for field work. if anyone has a idea please reply.

From the factory they had two 12 Volt batteries placed behind the cab with a LONG (-) cable from each battery running all the way up to the ground stud on the starter CE endframe, and a LONG (+) cable from each battery running all the way up to the big solenoid on top of the starter.

In other words, a 12 Volt system with two batteries in parallel.

I think that older Cummins had a 12 volt system with a 24 volt starter. The starter was the only thing that was 24 volt. It had two positive battery cable terminals.

Yep, JD, in old semis, yes, with series-parallel switched. but NEVER in Versatile tractors.

NOT sure WHY you are posting this irrelevant info here?

WELL BOB the Versatile tractor involved is old enough I thought it might have the old series parallel system in it. Is why I posted it.

JD, SORRY for snapping at you. I was tired, and have been dealing with WAY too much family stress lately!

My post was uncalled for, and I apologize.

That being said, I wish the OP would post back and tell us if he got the cables sorted out and the problem SOLVED.

I LOVE those old Versies and know their quirks like the back of my right hand!
