801 diesel starter

Long time lurker in need of starter for an 801 diesel (12 volt). Took mine to local shop for rebuild and have been informed that parts are no longer available from their supplier. Quoted $235.00 for a re-man with exchange! In search of something more reasonable. This site does not show one. Any leads appreciated. Thanks, John

Its been a long time and don't remember the internal differences. Think just 12v.
But you can beat that price even on ebay

I have been told but cannot confirm that the 801 diesel starter is the same starter as used on a Ford 352/390/406/427/428.
I just had one rebuilt about 6 months ago and my starter/generator man had all of the parts in stock. Maybe you need to try another shop.

800 series diesel is the same hp as my 3000D with 4 rather than 3 cyls. My tractor is spec'd at a 5" diameter starter. Bought one off the www from a company in New England, new. Forget the price; was either $250 or $500 area.

Replaced that, new 2/0 cables, new 31 sized OTR truck battery, this and that and finally figured out that my engine was worn out (just bought it). $1000 for an inframe I did, with a machine shop doing the uppers plus supplying new pistons and rings.

Runs like a top now and even in the winter seldom needs the "thermostart" to light off.

Had one rebuilt for my 961 diesel.I believe it cost $ 200 done by a local rebuilder.

also.. check dealer and here. they may carry one for about 152$

Thanks for all the input! I was sure that was pretty outrageous. After checking the link that was included by Greg-Ky I checked my local NH dealer. To my surprise he will have it for me Wednesday for $125.00 exchange. This internet thing may just work out...Happy New Year to all! John

They will work & appear to be identical. I'm using one for an early 390 on mine. Replaced it last spring at my local auto parts store. The drive came seperate but both were $100.
