801 PTO not working

What could cause the PTO in an 801 with SOS transmission not to work? Every thing else works fine. Lift is working good. Tractor transmission works good. Could this be an SOS problem?

Splain not working, Lucy! It would also be helpful to know whether you have the deluxe PTO (881) or not.

If it's not powering a load, it could be a simple cable adjustment, a PTO clutch problem or a problem with the shaft or coupler in the center housing.

If it continues to run and not shut off without a load, this is normal. There is no PTO brake in these units. If this your symptom, it should stop when a load is placed on it.

As Larry said, you need to tell us exactly which PTO setup it has, the 871 has single speed 540 rpm PTO and the 881 has the "deluxe" dual 540/1000 rpm PTO plus ground speed.

Also, a description of the exact symptoms will help us to be able to help you diagnose it.

I would venture a guess that the worst case would be something wrong with the "PTO circuit" that has caused it to be stuck off.

best case broken scenario would be stuck on, since its still usable.

best case completely(which ended up being my issue with my SOS) would be cable broken or not adjusted properly and there is nothing actually wrong with the PTO

edit to add the 3 extremes would greatly affect price. broken but stuck on is at least still usable but broken and off makes that not a very usable machine

Worst case would be something broken inside the transmission, some part that is no longer available. In which case you would be hunting salvage yards to find the replacement part, plus disassembling as much of the transmission that you would need to in order to get to the part that needs replacing. The transmission needs to be taken apart from the rear, so a split between the trans and rear axle would be first, followed by taking things out of the transmission until you get to the part that needs replacing. The PTO clutch is worst in terms of replacing or working on because it is literally the last thing that you remove when disassembling the transmission.

Best case is that the seller simply does not know how to operate the PTO correctly. If it is an 881 with the deluxe PTO, it could be that the main speed selector is in the neutral position, which is where it needs to be to engage the ground speed, and the ground speed is not engaged either, and pulling the handle on the dash does nothing. If that is the case you just need to move the speed selector to the desired speed position before pulling the handle on the dash.

Thanks, That's what I needed to know. It has a painted to sell paint job. Every thing painted red. Spark plug wires and all. Big turn off.
But it's not to far from me. Might run by a give him an offer. See if he's ready to deal. If not, I'll just walk away. Not like I need it bad.
