I realize I should be asking this on the other forum, but I like the no non sense answers I get on this forum, instead of smart alec B.S. that seems to lurk on other places..That said, can some one tell me the valve lash on an 801 gasser, and also how important is it to clean the starter mounting area compared to N series tractors? Tomorrow I am going to clean all the cables and this area and hope this girl will start on 6 volts, if not I guess its time to rebuild the starter.

If you will help us out w/ the engine size (134 or 172) we can probably tell you the valve lash.

" how important is it to clean the starter mounting area compared to N series tractors? " It's just as critical. A ground is a ground. Clean it up.

" I guess its time to rebuild the starter. " Why? Have you tested it? Checked voltage drop?

Starters do wear out. (actually, the bushings & brushes to be precise) But bad grounds & old cables are the usual suspects. Cheaper to fix too.

Everything Bruce said, plus I would make sure the battery cables are 1/0 gauge from battery to solenoid and from solenoid to starter. Also, the ground strap should be a 2 ga braid, as short as practical and grounded to a large bolt on the steering column. Remember, battery cables can go bad within the insulation, so I would consider replacing them if they look old, frayed, etc.

All 134, 144 and 172 have .015 vlave clearance - both intake and exhaust, gas or diesel.
And if somebody wants no non sense, non smart alec B.S. answers to questions like this then they should get an I&T FO-20 manual.
100% NO BS for about $30

Dog, I have one on order, I have a manual library that would bring tears to your eyes. I just wanted to get ahead of this project, I am sorry if this post was an inconvienence to you.
