806 mystery

I have found an 806 but it is factory turbo charged and has 1206 sheet metal and grill. It is old and worn out but everything is painted red
except the fenders and the white is starting to come through around the grill. It is a very late model 806 based in serial numbers. The story is
that the farmer wanted a turbo 806 and it was sent with 1206 sheet metal. Has anyone heard of anything like this?

Interesting. It is certainly odd. It is just like you are looking at a 1206 with red paint scheme instead of white but has an 806 serial number.

Nope , no 806 ever came from the factory with a hair dryer , what does the S/N tag say on the bell housing ?? next look at the engin block for the S/N and what does it say , D-361 or does it read DT-361 . The vary first 806 that sold here back in Sept of 63 was bought by my old Boss and it was a NON turbo for two days . Then and man that rented one of the larger shop bays at the main shop who0 rebuilt Detroit Diesels for the oil and gas company's and was just getting started in selling and installing turbo installed a 3 in and 3 out Turbiniek (sp) turbo on it and turned up the wick . The following weekend my uncle bought the second 806 to hit the area and three days later Wild Bill Dunkle installed one on it . Two years later old G F Howard bought 806 #2 and it got a turbo . I end up buying 806 #2 about 25 years ago as a dead tractor with a bad hyd leak and no batterys . That was and easy fix and i should have kept it but the all mighty buck prevented it and it sold . I would have to see the tractor fortmyself but i would say that it more then likely is a M & W turbo kit or someone like Wild Bill's set up . Now it could have all the parts that were used on the T D 15 as it had a turbo from the factoy BUT that engine was a D T 361 and had two piston oil squirter jets where a D 361 only has one per piston. But all the hardware will bolt on the D 361 Early blocks are different then later blocks different oil coolers different head bolts and a few other things.

Well then there is the other thing here Could it have been broke into at one time in it's life and had a 806 center section used to put it back together ?? My 806 had a 706 S/N tag due to it being hit by a semi and they used a 706 center section and never changed tags. On mine you can see the teltale signs of where they wrapped chains around her to pick it up and dented the tank sheet metal and the left fender is bent a bit . Plus i was told this when i bought it . I worked on a 1066 that got CREAMED by a coal hauler and i mean Creamed , both rear axles and housings broke fuel tank and dash end up fifty feet from the other half dozen pieces and parts . ft axle was a three piece deal center section was broke in four pieces and gears scattered all over the place. It is back in the field again and shys away from coal buckets .

Well we thought that maybe the transmission was switched out from an 806 but the wheel hubs are painted red. Here is the kicker. It has 806 plates on the front sheet metal and they look like they have always been on the sheet metal. The guy who bought it from the farmer contends it is a late model 806 and he wanted turbo. The dealer ordered it and it was end of production so IH used 1206 parts to outfit it. Hard to believe but a lot of mystery with this tractor.

Does it have the heavy category 3 3 point(1206),or the lighter cat 2 3 point(806), A lot can be changed/added/painted in 50 + years. So anything is possible.Dealer'upgrade',or factory used some 'leftover' parts. Frankentractor

Well to me it looks like a Johnny Cash Special as it has 56 sheetmetal and grill but 06 shifters so now it comes down to the Block is it a D 361 block or a D T 361 or is it a D407 or a DT 407 as i can not see enough other then the fuel filters Look on the left side of the block up where the head meets the block for a machined flat surface and the Engine S/N and displacement will be stamped . You can Bolt the exhaust manifold that was made for the turbo on to a no turboed engine and add the turbo and then plumb in the oil line and drain .

I seriously doubt the tractor left the factory with turbo - as mentioned below a lot happens in 50 years and memories fade or just plain make stuff up. Most likely added at the dealer or added by a mechanic somewhere else when new.

If the engine is a DT361 it left the factory with the turbo installed and it was installed in the tractor after the D361 failed.

Need any 806 gears? Neighbors burned in a shed fire. My uncle salvage all the rear end and transmission parts. Still had oil in the housings. I "inherited" the parts. Been thinking of taking them to the junk yard. That was 50 years ago. He dipped all the gears in warm gear lube.
