806 steering fails

Been having issue with steering on my 806 diesel. Using loader to unload pallet of minerals and wasn’t able to lift ( about 2400 lb) took a few bags off and could lift but the forks kept uncurling slowly. And then lost steering completely. Wheel turns easily but tires don’t move at all. Next day was working fine. Changed oil and filter which were a little dirty but nothing dramatic. And then had same problem This morning, Noticed that loader hydraulics were not powerful enough to get tractor front end off the ground and then lost steering, turn the wheel and no movement of tires at all.
If I get tire off ground I can move easily by hand by leaning on tire but doesn’t budge when turning steeering wheel at all.
And then after awhile it mysteriously started working again…
Anybody seen this before?


Previously noticed that steering was sometimes stiff at startup. But would improve as I used it.

Thanks for all your help keeping my old tractors running. I use them daily to grind feed and work on my farm.

This problem likely has no connection with your steering problem. Look at this video, at 3 minutes and following it shows you how the loader cylinders work. Hydraulic cylinder/valve video When the lever in the video centers just as those in your tractor do then the fluid is “blocked” in the cylinder and hoses and basically has no connection to other hydraulic functions on the tractor. For your cylinder to “uncurl” the piston ram seals on the internal moving part in the cylinder would have to let oil pass by them which is the most likely explanation or the valve would need to not seal properly and let a small amount of oil flow back into to tractor reservoir or oil would need to leak externally.
That is the only part of your question I can clarify easily. The intermittent steering problem could be caused by sticking spool valves inside the MCV “multi-control valve” of the tractor. That is the squarish cast part bolted on the side of the transmission housing directly below the clutch pedal. That is about as specific as I can get in terms of your steering problem. Hopefully someone else can give you more details.

Welp let's start with basic , when adding a loader to that tractor depending on loader cylinder size extra hoses ya MIGHT BE running low on hyd Oil and add in angle of ground say nose down fluid is running away from the pick up tube in the rear end where if ya had say a small crack ( not uncommon ) in the pick up tube 7you are sucking air and starving BOTH the rear pump that supplys oil for the main hyd's and y6ou are also staring oil to the M C V pump that controls everything else . SOOOoooo with the loader all the way UP Engine OFF pull the dip stick and see where the fluid level is seeing with the tractor on level ground . NEVER PULL THE Transmission dip stick while engine is running as it just might get between two gear in the transmission and your wallet will not like the end resultrs . If you find your on the bottom end of the totom pole dump five gallon in and see where you are . If five does not bring you up to or just above the full mark ADD some more till it does . If lifting capacity is not up to snuff then get a hyd. pressure gauge and plug into t a remote and see what you have for pressure when HOT . For ft. loader work i would recommend around 2150-2450.

If the loader dump cylinders are leaking off with the control lever in the middle (hold) position, you either have fluid bypassing in the cylinder itself or the control valve.
As far as not being able to lift much and your steering not working, those 2 might be related but is likely a separate issue than the dump cylinders leaking off.
I’ve got a 806 myself, but never have had to deal with hydraulic issues so I’m not real sure how the system is setup. I do know the MCV controls a lot of functions and can cause hydraulic issues. First thing I would do is get a pressure gauge and see where my pressures were at.
