820 pony queation

Just restored my 820 and have ran it only half a dozen times. Sat about a month and now have no spark on the pony engine. Power to the coils but nothing coming out.is there a way to check the coil packs? Or possibly a bad condenser? The mag was brand new when I restored the tractor. Thanks in advance

It's COMMON for the breaker points in those WICO's to get a coat of oxide when sitting unused for a while = no spark.

Burnish them with a clean piece of cardstock, then remove lint and debris with electrical contact cleaner and allow to air-dry while propped open.

Should I have power coming out of the coils when the ign switch is on or while the engine is cranking?

Is this pony wired up with the "coil protection circuit" with oil pressure switch... if so, there will only be power to the main low-tension terminal on the WICO when the engine is running, or the start button is pressed.

If NOT, there will be power to the WICO distributor at all times when it's ignition switch is on.

Connect a test light between the low tension terminals on the points and turn on the ignition.

If NO coil protection, with clean points, points "open", the light should light, points "closed" it should go out.


With or without coil protection, crank engine and the light should flash as the points open and close.
