fuel rack, it isn't froze, but it's not opening,, took a cover off the far end of the pump, can see an allen head that is moving with the rack,, tried moving it back and forth to free it up,, . should I take the big cover off ? I sprayed brake clean through from the supply to a drain on the far end.. could soak with atf,, idk Looks like more of an inspection cover on the engine side, should I pull the pump and go that route? thx

Only takes ONE plunger stuck on any inline pump to keep the rack from moving. I just repaired and returned a pump that had stuck plungers with stale fuel inside. How long since the engine last ran? If it's been awhile, and gallery is full of rust from water in fuel best find another pump. Have a Deutz pump in now for the same issue, haven't looked at it yet. DON'T beat on the rack allen screw, that can break gear segment teeth..

Send it out, its not worth risking the damage. That was mine Dieseltech mentioned. Just got it back from him yesterday. Looks great and am very pleased!

Ok, I get that about the rack and plunger,,, mostly scared of pulling the pump,, looks like a lot of teeth on the pump gear to line up, any advice on that?,, I would guess (somehow) mark a tooth, and mark the casting,, unless its simpler than that

In the hole that has the 1 1/4 inch plug there is a scribe line on the pump body and a scribe line on the gear hub, turn the engine till they line up and have at it. the gear scribe is often difficult to see with all the oil on it so get brakekleen and wash the gear as you rotate the engine. reinstall is easy once you have all lined up. Be super clean, if the engine is dirty, wash it before even loosening a line. diesel stuff does not tolerate dirt well,

repairing a stuck pump with just a little cleaner is as likely as repairing a flat tire by just adding some air and then check the valve stem. Some times it works, but 99 out of a hundred it wont. If it frees up some, but not perfect you could have a run away engine. This is a little hairy for a second or two. Sometimes they shut down, sometimes pistons change locations. Pump repair done @ a reputable shop doesn't cost that much, if you call around and ask some questions. You didn't date the only girl who lived close to you , you looked around and found one that you liked. Same as with pump shops. Don't just pick the first one to answer the phone, or the one who is close. Too many people tell horror stories about repair bills. Not all shops will hose you. Al

Do you have any suggestions Al? I got a quote from one shop last week, $800 flat fee to look at the pump and free it up, was told I could figure $1,300 if something needs to be replaced. Not sure if you guys think this is reasonable and common or not. Thanks

We have Pumpman and Dieseltech on forum who I have spoken with either personally, either one will do you quality work at as reasonable a cost as possible, I believe in supporting those who are there to hand out free advice and talking us through problems. Please consider one of them when choosing your repair station.
