830 generator

My generator was not working on my tractor so I had it rebuilt. Now when I used my tractor it seems to have discharged my battery. Prior to that my battery was ok . I unhooked the generator wires and my battery has not discharged itself. What would be the cause of this malfunction?

If your tractor is Positive Ground???? and you took your genny to a repair shop, theres a good chance its now Polarized at Negative Ground. If so??? you should have polarized it on your tractor BEFORE start up otherwise you may have damaged the Voltage Regulator. I would try to Polarize the genny before another start up and then try it again.

"What does this do"

It sets the polarity (+ or -) at which the genny begins to operate, and you really want it the same as your tractor battery polarity i.e. Pos or Neg Ground

"and why is it done?"

Its done so the genny charges the battery at the correct polarity and so you wont damage the voltage regulator

"was told it wasnt necessary"

No its NOT if the genny is already polarized to match your tractor battery BUT HOW DO THEY KNOW THAT??? And besides it doesnt hurt to do it again just to be safe. So Id be leary of whoever told you that.

Then it was originally POSITIVE GROUND.
Again, theres a good chance a genny shop who didn't know that Deere's were Positive Ground may have Polarized your genny for Negative Ground and mis informed you no other polarization was necessary YEAH RIGHT lol. If it was ran at the wrong polarity too long theres a chance the VR may be damaged.
