I just purchased a 830 2 cylinder John Deere and i am going to restore it and rebuild the motor. I would like to increase the hp for tractor pulling. I would like to be around 90 to 100 hp but i do not want to get to where the tractor is hard to start or will not hold up. Nothing too extreme. Is this able to be done and if so what would it take to get there. Any help would be great. Thanks,Scott

Just much power is required and for what class and division?
Depending on the track, weight and if the tractor has the creeper 1st gear. An 830 has enough power to pull 12,500lbs on a sticky clay track with power to spare with the creeper 1st gear.
Any other lighter class and track type is fine with the regular 1st gear.
There are three items to tune and max out. Before building HP and spinning the wheels at 1/2 track while the winners make full pulls.
The three items in order are #1 traction, #2 Traction and #3 Traction.

I would call a JD mechanical engineer that I know he is at Extremetractorparts.com his name is Ray . great guy .

In the quest for power, I think that the three factors you need to work on are #1 - air flow. #2 - fuel delivery. #3 - RPM.

These diesels love their rpm's. Go as high as rules will allow. For fuel, you can max out the rack setting, or if you need more, you can send out your injection pumps and injector tips for modification to achieve more fuel delivery. The names of the two shops that do this escape me, but if you search the archives on 80/820/830 performance you should find them. Air requires the most work. Porting and polishing of the head, gasket matching the head to the manifolds, polishing of the manifolds, oversized intake valves, dry air filter, etc. I believe that there is something to be gained with a cam shaft, but good luck finding someone who can offer you something in the way of a modified diesel cam. Because the injection pumps are driven by the cam, you get into a mess when trying to change cam timing. Good luck.
