841 Diesel Cam (continued)

I have the diesel engine in my 841 diesel tore down most of the way. For those who may have missed the previous posting, the hydraulic pump locked up and broke the main camshaft gear and mauled the crank shaft gear and the gear that drives the hydraulic pump. I took the head off it last night. I had two push rods that were bent and expected the valves to be in similar shape, but don't think they are. I will take the head to the shop and have it gone through. I have the 601 diesel engine all in pieces and will use the cam shaft and tappets and gears in the 801. I have been looking on this site for a complete overhaul kit. On this site, it is 605.89 bearings sold separately main bearings 34.81 rod bearings 33.84 shipping 45.00 grand total 719.54. I checked with Tractor Parts Express in Texas 549.99 complete kit main bearings 33.99 rod bearings 29.99 shipping 9.99 no matter what you order, grand total 623.96. Is their any reason this set wouldn't be just as good as the other? This is a Tru Power name brand as compared to the Tisco name brand. I figured that one company, made all of them anyway. Any suggestions?

You have to watch that the bearings. Some of the cheap kits have China bearings. They won"t last 10 hrs in a diesel. Tisco bearings are Clevite 77 bearings.

Matthew glad you posted back. I was curious about what you would find. I am about finished with a 172 diesel. I took the best of two complete engines an made one. I found lots of little things wrong with both of them. One had wrong rod bearings, broken pistons the other had a spun rod bearing and no valve stem seals, and some badly worn timing gears. I am not sure why they would be in such bad shape but the engine came out of a big mower that had a lot of hydraulics that ran off the cam gear. Personally I would tell the machine shop not to grind the seats and valves any more than they have to cause you lose compression when you sink those valves. Anyway if your cylinders are not badly worn I have some stuff that I ordered wrong that you might be able to use.

O.K. I haven't made any measurements yet, but I did feel of the cylinders and expected to feel wear at the top of the cylinder walls, but they were smooth. I don't know yet if everything is standard or not. I am working on it kind of slow, like on the back burner. It is definitely a sleeved engine. I am going to be working on a non sleeved engine next. It is in a 62' 801, that had sit for a long time and the rings are stuck..or at least that is what I think. I bought this one last year for the transmission, but got it running which made it real hard to pull the transmission. It blew out oil everywhere, from getting compression in oil. I believe that 601 trans is good so, now I can have another complete tractor. sorry bout rambling on and on...but this is a talk forum huh.
