The gas tank shutoff appears to have a lever does moving this stop gas?Tractor is recently purchased so have no background on this.

Yes, if it is located on the bottom of the tank it is supposed to shut off the gas, however many leak fuel past the valve. Don't know what you have some have installed inline shut off valves.

It should stop the gas from flowing to your carburetor, but as Glen said it actually does not. It reroutes the flow to your floor.

It didn't stop the tank from emptying just never saw one that snapped down with a lever.

They changed from the old screw type to newer lever type somewhere around 1958 with the change from XX) to XX1
