8420 or 8430

I want to replace my 8410 and have a chance to buy an 8420 or an 8430, both equiped with the about the same setup (light package, ILS, active seat, etc). I can"t make up my mind on which one would be better. Is there any issues with either one that I should be aware of that could help me with my dicision. I know the 8430 has more horsepower but I think I can live without it for my applications.

The 8430 has a slightly better cab, they added some sound dampeners in the ceiling of the cab. Also, the 8430 is supposed to be 10% more fuel efficient than the 8420 and has the new 9.0L engine compaired to the 8.1L in the 8420.
Hope this helps,

Neither one has an 8.1 or a 9.0.They both have a 456 in them and are speced as practically the same tractor. The only difference I can see is the HP and even that is only 10 HP. There may be other differences such as the cab or something else that the specs do not include.Their also apparantly the same weight.I would lean towards the 8430 because it has a quiter cab and has more HP.

He is talking about brand new tractors with the IVT transmissions. The 8420 has a 496cu inch 8.1L, and the 8430 has the new 548cu inch 9.0L. I'd go with the 8430 myself because that tractor has smashed a fuel economy record. Also, there is 15hp difference between the 2.

That's kinda funny.I was talking about the Ford New Holland from 1992 -1997. Just pretend I never responded to that post.Sorry about that.I was kinda wondering about the active seat thing and ILS

Yeah he didn't say what brand, but an 8410, 8420 and 8430 are all John Deere models, and IVT is John Deeres tradmark name for their variable speed transmission, same as he also mentioned ILS, which is John Deeres Independant Link Suspension, or in other words, their suspended MFWD axle. Active seat is their newest super comfy suspended seat. He is looking at some real nice tractors, but those are priced around $170,000.

Yes, they are near new John Deere tractors (no IVT though). I am getting a good trade in value on the 8410 which has plagued me with power hopp troubles. The ride with the independent link suspension is nothing short of incredible. Is the 15 hp extra worth 6000 dollars more?

Local dealer here has this 8430 with something like 186 hours on it. Sticker is $189K which is $20K higher than a like 8420.

They look like a nice outfit, for sure.

Those are some really nice tractors, lots of power and great creature comforts, almost like being at home. My question on these new tractors with their computer controlled shifting and engine monitoring and such do you think they will be still able to do the job they were designed to do in 65 years like my 42 JD A?

Buy one of each that way you will know plus this is an antique tractor group and we all know you can never have too many tractors!!!!

Be a nice upgrade from your 966 wouldn't it Allen, or did you end up buying a 1066 and fixing that up too?. Anyways, if you buy that rig, then the missus could have some horses!.

Yes, I think the 8430 is worth a lousy $6,000 more. If you run it much, which I know you are going to in order to justify the cost of that rig, the fuel savings alone would pay for that $6,000. John Deere tweaked their powershift even more in the 8430, and then with the new variable geometry turbo on the new 9.0L, you got a tractor thats quite a lot more fuel effiecent and have more power over the 8420. Not to mention, you'd have the most current model.

in the long run the 8430 is going to be better. i cant remember how many miles of wires they eliminated on the 30 series from the 20s. the 30s are all can bus and the 20s are can and ccd. the 30 is much more fuel efficient too.

Well as a John Deere mechanic I'm gonna say go with the 8430. It'll probably cost you a little more but the resale value will be higher. They're both great tractors but you'll be happier with the 8430.

Good luck, Cory
