8460-65 Case IH Baler

What about these balers? Are they any good? Anyone have any experience with one? I am looking at one of this type but have no idea what I am getting into. Need your views. Thanks.

I had a new 8465, back in 1996. A decent baler. Mine was the automatic. Only tractor hydraulics were on the pickup. Only 2 problems I had were the clutches, plugged it in wet hay, and had too big of tractor in front of it, and I had to replace a couple roller bearings twice. Burned my Heston version of it to the ground because of a bad bearing. The 856 Heston is the exact baler as the 8465.

The Hesston 856 was a different baler than the CaseIH 8465. The Hesston equivalent to the 8465 was the 565. The CaseIH version of the 856 was the RS561 and was only made for a few years before the two companies parted ways with hay equipment and CaseIH picked up the New Holland models.

I was always a NH fan but we now have two 8465 balers and they are not the automatics. Very good balers and they don't seem to have as many bearing troubles as the NH's. The only problem with the Case baler is you CANNOT bale tough hay at all, the hay will plug the pick-up. I was not sure of these balers until my father in law bought one and 3 years later I bought one.

Sorry for the late reply but I was out out of net for 2 weeks. I have a 8465A. Good baler but it will plug the pickup if the hay is short and very dry. New belts on the pickup roll will eliminate most of that problem. Adjust down PTO speed relative to ground speed also helps. Since I did both of those items I have had no problem with it. Makes a good dense bale.
I use a laser thermometer on the bearings from time to time to check them for heat. In 4 years of use I have had no change in temps.
