850 charging prob

Finally got around to replacing the regulator which fixed the no charge prob. Problem now is as rpms increase so does the charge till the Amp meter is pegged and regulator is getting hot. Now what?
And thanks to the two folks that helped me diagnose the orig. prob. I can't find the post and don't remember the names. Sorry.

850 .. assuming it has the oem style 6v genny, and a B circuit reg.

if it charges high, pull the field wire at the vreg.. if it drops, then the vreg field contact is liekly stuck.. sometimes a rap with a screwdriver helps.. but usually a new non defective unit is needed. if it's a lost cause and non returnable.. pry it open for a looksee.

make sure nothing is shorting the armature tab to the field tab..

by the way.. don't run her like this..

that genny is only good for about 150w peak, and 120w max rated.. and would probably be happier around 105 or less sustained. On the test bench you can make her do 180w for extremely short durations.. you are probably seeing that if you are pegging a 30-0-30 meter.. and that ain't good for the genny..

Thanks soundguy. Pulled the field wire and there is no charge. Ohmed out between field and arm term., and wires and found no shorts.
Gen is orig. Not sure what B circuit reg. is, but ordered it from this site.

if you leave the field wire disconnected the battery will discharge.. but yeah.. you can do it. also.. you might try adding in a 1157 tail lamp bulb in series with the field wire to the gen.. might get you a low charge.. might not.. all it is is a resistor inline to cut field current.. an ignition resistor may work... need to look at amperage..

b circuit means the regulator provides field power ( via arm terminal thru vreg ).. instead of A circuit like the 8n where vreg provided field ground.

very likely bad out of the box.. not uncommon these days. even from major suppliers like the dealership.. etc.

Hey soundguy, if he tries to polarize his system can that unstick a regulator? It seems like I followed your advice a couple years ago to polarize my 850, and in the process my regulator ""unstuck" and began to work.

Called the vendor and they are sending another regulator. The batt. is brand new so should stay up for the 1 1/2 hr. job.

Hope the second one works. ( made in India )

Thanks again for the help.

polarizing effects the genny.. a non polarized system won't charge from residual magnetics in the field pieces.. thus no power from the gen.. thus no cutout closing.

unless it's simply 'sticky' which a mechanical rap on the side may fix.. it's likely a DOA unit.

besides.. his unit is charging at max.. and thus is already polerized.
