I have to put a clutch in my 860, and want to replace the input shaft seal on the 5 speed transmission. I've looked on this site and can't find one. Do I have to get the seal from ford. Also is there anything I should know about changing that seal.

Tim

Unless you have a generic seal number you will likely need to buy this seal from CNH.

If you want to order online and pay shipping you can buy from a dealer that sells online such as the one linked below.

Your 860 should have a double clutch there for it should have two seals to replace. NDA-7048-A and 8N-7052-A2 should be the PNs

Some 860s had a single clutch and some had a double clutch depending on year. Mine has a single clutch.

You actually don't have an 860! You have an 850. What model is listed with the serial number on the left side above the starter on the transmission housing?

I don"t know where you get your information, but it"s not true. ALL 860"s have a double clutch. ANY 800 series with a single clutch and a 5 speed transmission is an 850.

That"s how the Ford model numbers work. The 6 in the middle of the model number indicates double clutch with a 5 speed trans. If it has a 5 in the middle, it calls out a single clutch with 5 speed trans.

Single or double clutch has nothing to do with the year. Look on the flat area below the air cleaner (above those two empty bolt holes) on the left side. You should see a three digit model number (850 or 860) with a serial number below it. If your tractor says 860 and you don"t seem to have a double clutch, perhaps the clutch linkage has been connected to the wrong hole. There are 2 holes on the clutch linkage clevis (below the left footrest). One hole gives you a double clutch and the other hole makes it act like a single clutch. Consult your owners manual for details.

Guys it's an 860, serial # 39883 and it's been an 860 for the last 35 years I've owned it. The numbers are very clear, the tractor has been stored inside for most of its life.

There are 2 holes in that clevis your talking about, the pin is in the forward hole.

I'm not concerned about single or double clutch, just whats involved with the input shaft seal. Thanks

TJ:

IF your tractor is an 860 AND if it has a single clutch, it is a hybrid. Ford made NO 860s with a single clutch.

Regardless, you will likely need to order the seal(s) from a CNH dealer unless you have (the) generic seal number(s).

See my post below to order online.

Tomorrow I'll see if I can get a pic. of the serial# and 860 above it, a pic. of the clutch, and a pic. of front of the trans. then you guys can decide what it is.

Tim

With the pin in the forward hole you are not activating your PTO clutch. Do you have to shut the engine off to engage the PTO?

That would be interesting to see.

ditto what others are telling you.. 5spd, single clutch = 850, 5spd double clutch = 860.

guiess someone could have used the case from an 860 to fix thair 850.. but that's s stretch.. more likely some of the things the other guys have stated.

how many fingers on your pressure plate,3 or 6?
3= single clutch 850
6= double clutch 860
seals are not that hard to change

That sounds cool, love to see the tranny pics. I didn't want to pile in with more opinion as it's not answering your question, but - you pose an interesting puzzle aside from your question.

If you have the old seal in reasonable condition, often a Napa or similar store can match it up from something off the shelf. But if all you have is a few shavings, then you need to look up the part number on the NH web site & hope they can cross-match the part number.

Otherwise, support your local NH dealer & just buy it from him. It's only one seal.

Tim, Someone may have put the single clutch in there because it is cheaper. You could put a double clutch back in there and have a Live PTO tractor. I had a chance to buy a 960 one time that you had to turn it off to engage the PTO. I think it would be worth your time and money to check it out. These guys on here really know what their talking about, and your tractor is more valuable as an 860 with live PTO double clutch.

Guys here is the clutch

The input shaft

And the model, its a little hard to see, my camera wouldn't clear up the image, but you can see 860 I think

Yes, that is the single stage clutch and single input shaft for an 850. My guess is that the tractor originally had a dual stage clutch and the dual input shaft and someone twisted the outer input shaft off so they replaced it with the single input shaft (and about 20 other parts). That is the difference between an 850 and 860- the flywheel, clutch and the first 15 or 20 pieces in the transmission.

I went to the ford dealer today to get the input shaft seal, and the one that fits is for an 850. The parts guy didn't know what to think and I sure don't. Everything on it is 860 except the transmission. I've used it for 35 years with an over riding clutch on the PTO, so I guess I'll just keep on keepin on.
Thanks for the help guys

Tim
