Hello I recently bought an 860 in an online auction. I went to look at it once before it sold but the battery was dead and it wouldn't start. Today dad and I went to get the header and bring it home. the diesel pump leaks and needs to be started with ether but once it starts it runs out real nice, I am wondering what mite be the problem with the pump and would it be a simple fix or an expensive one. Well I just want to know what the easy things to look for are before i get it home where i could pull the pump. also the reel lift valve was stuck open tapped it back to center with a hammer but still acts sticky. the other big problem was I could not get the tranny into low range so that is my biggest worry what do i need to be looking for there I am pretty sure its sticky cables but could it be something else. I am not feeling like i got a raw deal because i got the machine pretty reasonable I would just like some help with getting her going. oh it is a late model gear drive.
thanks Levi

On my 7700 John Deere the shift cables get sticky after it sits for a long time so if you could work some penetrating oil into the cables and work the lever it will probably free up . Is it the injection pump larking or the lift pump ?

How difficult would it have been to give the full information right away? Tell us that it is a Massey Ferguson 860 with a 6 cylinder 354 diesel engine. Then tell us where it is leaking. Is it leaking from the throttle shaft on the right side of the pump, the side nearest the cab?

well with a three year old and a one year old it is a tad difficult to remember everything i need to say about the machine when i had just a few free moments to get a message out. I do not know where it is leaking from i tried to get dad to tell me but all he could say was it is leaking I was in the cab trying to get it started. it was a really hectic day we had a limited amount of time to get the header on the trailer and headed back home so it was crazy i was unable to gather as much info as i would have liked. it looks like its going to rain Tuesday night so i may be able to get up there on Wednesday. and have some time. I'm sorry RM normally i try to do better but i dropped the ball.
Thanks Levi

Yep, been there, lived through that while trying to farm.

Would NEVER do that again!

Hope it works for you!

Don?t worry about it . You?re not paying anything for the advice you asked for and nobody Is paying you . it?s easy to forget all the exact details or not know all the details but you still want to make a post anyway . Sounds like you?ll have to probably take the pump off and get it resealed and or rebuilt

A new Massey man! When I bought my first Massey, an older more experienced Massey man asked me if I was a religious person. A little shocked by the question I responded with a yes. He replied, Good. You'll need it. He was correct.

LOL I'm actually not a new massey man just coming back into the fold I used to have an 860 just like the one i bought, straight six gear drive, also had 2 760s, I ran those with my cousin and we did a little custom harvesting back in the early 2000's. then he wanted out so we sold them. now I am running an 8820 and a 7700 the 7700 is getting pretty tired so I was looking to replace that one. I found this machine and now this is where i'm at

Dad had a 750 and he never had a lick of problem
With it the only thing latter in life was it would some times get stuck in gear ⚙️. Left water in it one year and cracked the block had the local welder weld it right in the machine and then ran it

Looks like we both have the same habits. I run both MF and JD. 750 and a 7720. Both have been temperamental this year to say the least. Yesterday I threatened the 750 it was heading to the fence row like its predecessors.
