860 Starter Button

Yesterday while just sitting there idling the starter decided to engage. There was also smoke coming from the push button. I shut it off and had to disconnect the battery to shut the starter down. It's still the OE safety button on top of the tranny cover.

Question one is, does this happen, do these buttons go bad like this?

Question two is, If I pull the shifter handle and then the top cover is there anything going to go ga-sproing and make me more work? The manual is kinda vague on this.

Are sure the wire going to the starter button didn't ground out on something?
When you remove the shift handle there is a woodruff key and a spring underneath it. The handle and the shaft it fits on are both tapered and getting them apart can be difficult- just like trying to separate a ball joint or tie rod end. Once you have the handle off and remove the top cover there are no springs.

Thx Texas, just as you said, the shifter was a little stubborn but once it popped it was pretty straightforward. There was nothing obviously wrong with the switch but I swapped it out anyhow.

The wire was the first thing I checked, sure would have been nice if it were shorted.

Thanks again, Mike
