860 Wont Start

I went out to start up my 860 today just to warn it up and it would not even turn over. It has been sitting about 3-4 weeks and ran just fine when I put it up.

I though well dead battery, so drove down there and put the cables on it.

Nothing but a click from the solinoid.

Thought it might be a dirty cable to the starter, so cleaned it good.

Nothing again.

Thought it might be another connection so I tried the cables straight to the starter.

Nothing

I couldnt remember if the starter engaged when i tried the first time to start it so I though that might be hung up. I put a wrench on the crank pully nut, but couldnt get it to turn over. even tried with a pry bar and couldnt get it (granted I did not have a good grip on either and didnt have a lot of force)

Tried to pull the starter, pulled the 3 bolts but it wasnt loose, does the started bolt on like an 8N with the through bolts????

At this point I was getting mad so gave up for the day before I started trying to fix it with the 2lb hammer.

Any ideas where to start? Pull the starter? I cant imagine the engine getting locked up but who knows. No water in the oil at least, thats all I looked for.

I have a 860 too...every now and then mine does the same thing. I have found if you push down on the shifter while it is in neutral and push the starter it will work. I don't know if there is a neutral safety switch on these 860's.

Let me know how this worked for you. I am curious.

I need to add...one time before that, the selenoid would just click and the starter would not spin. I rebuilt the starter (bendix was bad).

Thanks, Its not the safetl switch , I bypassed that by putting juice to the starter direct.

Do you remember how the starter came off?? was it the three bolts on the plate behind it, or the two bolts from the back going all the way through?? I ran out of daylight today to take a close look.

3 bolts fromthe side the starter was on. If the bendix is engaged it takes a little twisting and turning to remove it.

It sounds like you had just enough juice in the battery to engage the bendix into the flywheel and it is now stuck there. Remove the oil filter and the 3 bolts that hold the starter to the transmission and turn/twist/pull the starter out. Once you have it removed you can connect your jumper cables to the starter and it should spin freely and the starter drive gear will retract. While you have it out clean the starter to transmission mating surfaces so that the starter gets a good ground in the future.

3 simple bolts but if it has been years since it has been off and or the bendex is stuck at the flywheel you may need to do a bit of wigging and pushing and pulling to get it to pull out. If the bendex is locked in the flywheel some times you can it if freed up by turning the engine back wards which is not easy to do either but can be done som,e time by jacking up one side and putting it in gear then grab the where and push/pull it
