Friend/neighbor has an 8600 thePTO doesn't work. hasn't for some time. He doesnt want to fix it.Says it cost too much, gonna just
set it on blocks for parts for his other tractors. The clutch also just started to slip. It is a otherwise sound tractor. My
question. Is the Ford Pto set up like IH? Does it have a 'clutch' in the rear and a PTO drive on the pressure plate? how
expencive shuld it be?Thanks. Steve

PTO clutch is wet plate, multi-disk in the rear axle, driven by a shaft that runs through the middle of the trans, which is splined into a hub bolted to the crank.

Not hard to work on, and most common issues with these don't require big $ in parts.

It has a hydraulically operated clutch pack in the rear end. check pressure by adapting a gauge onto an SCV. I don't recall correct pressure but you can see how it changes with operation of the lever.

most all of the parts needed for those repairs can be purchased after market at a fraction of what they cost from new holland. Some of the aftermarket parts are actually the same as the oem. Some not all. It would need to be split between the transmission and rear housing to do the pto work.

Incorrect. Pressures at the SCV (a.k.a. "remote valve" in Ford lingo) have nothing to do with the pressure in the PTO system. Two separate pumps in one housing. The only way they are related is if the pump inlet filter was plugged or damaged.

An 8000 doesn't need to be split. Why would an 8600?

Ask Rick B what he thinks about servicing the PTO through the hydraulic pump hole. I've never tried it, but when I looked into it once, I said "no thanks".

I suspect the revised internal plumbing to the pump on an 8600 prevents the option you are thinking of. Most 8600s had the external filter, whereas 8000s came from the factory without one.

Either would need to be split if I were to work on them. Anyone who hasn't serviced an 8000's PTO through the pump mount area isn't qualified to recommend that method. Once was more than enough for me.
