Hi guys, l'm re-wiring a 1960 861 diesel for a customer and have noticed the fuel leak-off line for the injectors from the head to fitting in tank is
not there. The fitting is in the side of the head and the inverted flare nut is in the fitting, also the nut is in the fitting at the tank but the line is
gone. It looks like someone plugged the nuts but the one at the head is now leaking. I called my local CNH dealer to get a new line which they
have in stock for $225.00 & change ??? This is a 14" long 1/8" line and the smallest brake line is 3/16, so my question is can I just T a line from
the head into the return from the injection pump?

I'm by no means an expert here, but guess I'd try to find something to adapt the 3/16 line to the fittings or try copper tubing. You can surely find copper tubing in 1/8'.

I have some 1/4" copper tubing and the fittings to run a line and T it into the return from injection pump which is 1/4" if that would work ok. Both
lines go to the same fitting on the bottom of the tank, so I'm thinking it would work but I have been wrong before. Just want to get others opinion
before I do it.

The return fitting in the tank has 2 stand pipes. The stand pipe for the pump is (I forgot) about 4-5" long and the stand pipe for the injector return line is about 8" long. Maybe someone knows the correct distance. Some of them come apart. Its made so there will be no pressure from the fuel in the tank pushing back on the returning fuel. I found that the new brass washers they sell now leak after torquing them. Copper is the best because it gives a little. I have seen aluminum ones also. You should test the injector return line after installing for leaks with a small needle and syringe with soapy water. Use a very low amount of pressure to check as you dont want to make a new leak. It would probably be better to hold some clear hose to the fitting in the head and just blow with the hot air you got in ya while someone checks each fitting and the lines. If your by yourself just thread your line into the head and stick your hose on the other end. Copper line makes an easy fix.

The owner of the tractor just had a new rebuilt injector pump and injectors installed before he brought it to me to do the wiring. There aren't any leaks on any of the lines it just doesn't have the line from the injectors to the tank. So I'm just wondering if it would work ok to T into the pump return line.

Dieseltech would probably say no, it has something to do with pump pressures. Those stand pipes are there for a reason. I have seen it done though, also saw the return from injectors tapped into the fuel sender on top.

Thanks guys for the replies, at this point l'm going to let him take it back to the guy that installed the pump and injectors. I don't want something to go wrong and it come back on me.
