861 Proof Meter

I recently installed a new cable on my Proof Meter. Reads RPM's with no issue but the hours don't seem to be changing. The little hour glass dial rotates but the #'s haven't moved and I have at least 2 hours on it. The actual meter is new. Possible bad meter? Anyone else come across this? Thanks!

I replaced the Proofmeter and cable on my 660 last fall and got just about the same result. The tach seems to work well, but the hour meter stayed on 0 for what seemed like forever before it changed to 1. I'm not sure how accurate the hour meter is, but it does change periodically. I'm up to 5 now.

I would run it a bit and see what happens.

I believe that if you read the fine print on the face you will see that it is hours at something like 1500 RPM. Thus if you are just loafing along as when I am raking hay at 800 RPMs it will not be advancing.

I got one from Carpenter that was supposed to be high quality. The hours rolled up at 1/2 speed. After I finally verified that, it was returned and the replacement has been functioning fine for 6 years.

I'd run it for a day and then if it isn't correct, return it.

The hour meter will keep time with a clock when the tractor is run at the rated RPM - typically printed on the meter face. The meter face on my 1963 4000 says "hours at 1515 RPM".

If I work my 4000 at 758 RPM (1515/2) it will take two hours (clock time) for the hour meter to advance one hour.

Check around where you live. I have two different speedometer shops that can fix the original hour meters. I am in Iowa so it would be too far.

Hey fellas,

Here are some photos and comments on repair of an original SOS proofmeter on my 971. Still working nicely, although if it gets real cold (0-10 degrees F) it wobbles too much and I have to disconnect it. I think I had to disconnect it one winter. On mine, the main shaft had seized.

If you will click on the photos, they will enlarge and there should be a note at the bottom.
