I recently purchased an 1958 861 tractor. It was origianlly an 801 Select-O-speed. The previous owner put in a 5 speed. I am having problems with the PTO. The engage/disengage lever does not seem to work. The PTO is always spinning. I do not believe that this is correct. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks

The PTO Engage/Diengage Lever may have become disconnected internally. You need to get an Owner's Manual and a Service Manual to learn how the PTO engages/disengages and how to set the clutch pedal properly.

You might look at the PTO shaft itself and see if it has a twist in it. I have a 851 that was originally a 871 with the select-o-speed trans. The previous owner installed an 850 back half and I had the same issue. The PTO would not engage in my case. Turns out the shaft had been twisted in the spline area where the collar shifts the PTO in and out.

I'm no SOS expert, but I think that they sometimes spin with out power just from fluid drag. If you can stop it by pressing a 2x4 against it that would show that it was not under power.

The PTO cable on the dash will NOT be hooked up to anything if the Sel-O-Speed was taken out and replaced with any other transmission, but there should be a lever on the left side on the rear-end housing by your left foot that would be the PTO control, if you don't have that, then you have your-self one cobbled up tractor.

You are right John. I have a 1963 2000 SOS and when I fire it up the pto spins for a while until the fluid warms up and most of the time quits. Also i can stop it like you said as long as its not engaged

My tractor does have the PTO lever on the side of the rear housing. It does not seem to do anything when moved forward or backward. I am hoping this is a simple fix. Thanks
