871 engine ID

New to tractors, have what I believe to be a '59 871 with a 4 cylinder gas engine. Looking for help determining if it is a 801 or a 601. Is there a way to tell which engine it is? Tractor was in a field fire, no decals left. Right side of engine has a six digit number cast on it. Left side has a number like 92E. Timing cover has EAF-, but I assume that would be the same for both engines.

WGB:

The differential, carburetor, air filter, air inlet tube, fuel tank and exhaust are all noticeably larger on the 8x1 tractors as compared to the 6x1 tractors.

That said, perhaps the easiest way to determine the difference is the steering column.

The hood is mounted higher on the 8x1 tractors. As a result, the steering column extends above the dash a couple of inches on the 6x1 machines while the steering wheel is mounted just above the dash on the 8x1 machines.

WGB;

The letters EAF indicate it is a 172 ci. They should be followed by 6015, ie EAF 6015. This number should be located on the left side of the block. The number 92E is a casting code which indicates the year month and day the part was made. Yours would be 1959, February 5th. You can look for the model and serial number by looking at the flat on the transmission just aft of the starter. Two lines will be given, model number and serial number. The only problem that may arise is if the trans was changed out sometime in the tractors' history as the trans carried the model and serial number.

The 871 is the model number, the 8 indicates a utility tractor with and adjustable front axle; the 7 indicates a select-o-speed trans with single speed PTO and 3 point hydraulics; the 1 indicates the series, ie 01. Go to the lonk below for more info.

Thanks, the Smith's site was very helpful. It appears that I have one of the early Gold Demonstrator select-o-speed tractors. I asked the seller what the original color was, and was told it has always been the tan or gold color still visible on the fenders. I didn't know there was such a thing as a gold Ford. The transmission appears to have been changed because it is orange and only has the serial number stamped at the starter mount on the bellhousing, no model number.
I will look harder for the engine number, but so far have only found the very distinct cast in six digit number with no letters on the left side (I don't have the number with me at present).

Thanks, those look to be the correct numbers. I don't have the number with me at this time, but I am pretty sure that is the number.

Hello WGB, To be an original Gold Demo tractor the serial number should be between 60,692 and 71,505 . The highest Gold Demo serial number I have is 70,944 , 71,505 is a very original low hour tractor that is NOT a Gold Demo that belongs to a friend of mine . Thanks Tony
