871 pto cable

ST:

You should start with a proper Ford service manual for S-O-S equipped tractors. Installation and adjustment of the cable is well covered in the Ford service manual

The (two piece) cable is probably still available from CNH but you should sit down before asking the price.

The PTO cable is not 2 piece. You're thinking of the shifter cable.

(quoted from post at 14:10:23 07/25/09) I pulled the handel out and it just kept on coming out where would I start. thanks.

Saddletramp,

I would reccommend inspecting the cable and if it looks ok, trying to install it yourself to see if it works. It takes a little patience to install the transmission top plate while keeping the "sleeve" for the PTO cable in the right location. If someone got frusturated or just didn't pay attention, your PTO cable is likely just hanging into the transmission sump and not connected to the control valve assembly at all. I would concur that the appropriate manual is needed, (I got a decent reprint for $30). The cable (handle and all) will spin and thread into the control valve assembly. It's all doable and is the best place to start.

This is not a problem. Use the shifter cable stub in the PTO actuator while installing the cover.

Thanks Larry,

I did end up using the smaller tranny cable (as covered in the owner's manual), but I must have tried without that once or twice because I vaguely remember it. This is a good example of the benefits of having an owners manual.

After returning from camping this weekend, we have had some fresh peaches from our peach tree and will have our first sweet corn from out garden this year. Our peachtree is small but loaded and my they were good. I take it you have access to the internet where you are in IN Larry, I hope your project is going well.

Did Frans make a purchase from you?

Franz did. I will leave for IN tomorrow, so not sure what I'll find there. Enjoy the fruit of the land.
