8820 grain tank leak

Pulled my old JD 8820 out of mothballs for wheat harvest this year and I’ve got a grain leak rusting out at the base of the boot - the angled box that houses the gear box and auger - for the upper clean grain auger that dumps it in the bin.

I think the only way to really fix it is pull it off and replace it or weld it.

Any tips or tricks on how hard that is?? I might try patching it one more time to finish out this harvest if it’s a real bear, but can’t seem to quite seal up a hole high up on the side.

Thanks for any advice,
Howard

I'm not familiar with that machine but is there any way to get at it with a tin patch and some sheet metal screws? Lay a bead of silicone around it first.

Ha ha. I really like y’all’s thinking - but I’ve tried three times and it is at an odd angle/tucked up under the gearbox/etc…. This last time I really thought I had it, but am about ready to bite the bullet and pull it.

Just can’t tell if it’s a matter of getting a bunch of bolts loose, or if I may have to deal with an auger swedged on a gear box shaft….

I haven’t really farmed in a while, but am getting back in, so a lot of my old an neglected (but paid for ha ha) needs a lot of attention… if I have to pull it, I think I’ll weld a 1/4 thick floor back on… ha ha

Red/Green handman secret weapon, Duct tape...
Gorilla tape is the new duct tape for combines.
Started with a small hole in the return fan housing on a case one little patch of tape
Kept wearing an kept putting more tape over it
Made it over several hundred acres
Once had time to replace the thing the hole was plate sized but that dang tape was still holding strong
Lol

Im pretty sure I know right where you're talking. Had to fix the same thing on the 7720 last year. I pulled the auger out and we drove the combine to a local welding shop and they welded a piece of sheet metal in the bottom half of the housing.

Some words of wisdom if you are going to pull the auger out: don't waste your time trying to get the auger to come loose from the shaft coming out of the gearcase. Unless you're really lucky I doubt it'll come off. Take the pulley off the gearcase. Unbolt the outer half of the gearcase from inner half. Take the bolt out holding the gear to the shaft that drives the auger. Pull the gear off the shaft. Unbolt the auger housing from the grain tank. Pull the auger with the outer housing and shaft still attached together. Then you'll be able to access the worn through spot in the lower housing

Somebody years ago did this same type of repair on the 6620. Only difference is I think that one is brazed in place

Thanks for the wisdom!!! 🤔

That shaft to the gearbox is one of the main things I was really worried about…

The crazy thing is - the previous owner apparently replaced both the box itself, and the clean grain auger both. So it has very close tolerances - except for the damn rusted holes…

Probably not too many people even run these anymore - but in case it helps anyone else - the elevator will swing back away to the rear and I was able to pull the whole auger assembly by myself in just an hour or so. I’ll be able to weld it up nice now! 🙂
