885 David Brown Tractor Hydraulics

I was brush hogging up a deep ditch today with the lift up as far as it would go. After finishing the cut, the lift is far higher than normal and will not lower. Jacked up brush hog and took top link loose to check for binding. Not the problem. Any suggestions what to look for? Hydraulics worked great all day until this happened.

I’ve been ghosted by similar before. Check the three point lock knob on the left rock shaft housing. Possibly the selector position knob on the right? Maybe the bypass of the valve chest?
In a similar event I opened up the cover of the valve chest and checked the linkages for any binding. I can’t say exactly what I poked, but up on restarting the hydraulics worked.
Check the manual or even YouTube. Your answer is out there.

You may have hyper-extended the 3pt lift cylinder, pulled it apart.

I am not a David Brown expert by any means, but I have worked on a few. This seems to be a common problem with them. Hydraulic oil has to be very clean with no water or contamination. Filter in bottom housing needs to be changed regularly. The control valve is in the right axle housing and has small orifices that are easily plugged. They can be cleaned by removing to caps and removing springs and plungers. You need a service manual. David Browns have good hydraulics when they work properly but are very finicky.
