886-Not fix TA?

Im looking to buy a tractor, found a 78 886 for $8,000, which looks good, but he says the TA slips on the low side, I assume he means when you pull it back to go slower.

Question: Could a person keep driving it in high (Direct, I assume) and NOT fix it? He says hes driven it like that since last summer, has done some rakeing and feeding cows this winter.
I know you could choose to not fix older Internationals, I think I read that the 86 series is different, that if the TA is going out in low, the high will soon follow.
Is that correct or can you just keep driving it?

Thank you!

It will run for years in HI.Eventually the HI side will fair, requireing replaement, but it can run for years with the low side out.IMHO,8000 is a bit high for a tractor with te TA out.5000 is more inline.A TA job will cost 5000. Just keep that in mind.Otherwise looks to be a decent tractor.

I would knock the cost of replacing the TA off any price I would offer for the tractor. When you try to sell it the potential buyers will do the same.

Yea ya can run on the high side . Now as to replacing for me it is not a big deal , BUT i have everything to do the job with . They are a little more work to do as ya have to work under the cab and ALOT more stuff under there to unhook . I have stands that hold the ft of the cab and i bring the speed transmission out with the engine and ft end on the rolling spliting stands .

Well just how much do you think he should knock off here . Do you have any idea how much a dealer will charge today . No your not going to get a New / Rebuilt T/A and a new / Rebuilt clutch pressure plate , IDPTO input shaft a rebuilt MCV and MCV pump , recharge of the A/C and labor for a grand or even two grand . someone told me that his Neighbor just dropped over 6 grand having one done at the local dealer . Long cry from what i use to charge . Prices are just plum nuts today . Saw today some nut job thinks his 826 with 11000 hrs and NO PTO one remote old paint is worth 19 grand of the 22000 dollar 1066 The 18000 S/MTA Diesel . Only saw ONE tractor that was maybe a grand over what it was worth and that was and 806 .

I usually dont deal in IH tractors with cabs. But did buy a couple on order one was a 1086 6700hr. estate one owner 3miles from my house original w/duals everything worked and that tractor was $10K and a 1486 6100 hours nice original a/c worked and T/A was good it was $9K.The cabs except for entry and exit arent that bad to run.I would allow a min of $3K to fix T/A on 886. I have had many IH tractors and never had a T/A fail.

The cheapest T/A job was on a 1256 that a guy called me on and said T/A had been out for a couple years.Went and looked at it and T/A was pulled back and owner said he just drove it around that way as T/A was out.Told him that would be a first but bought it and sprayed linkage with WD/40 and the I had a cheap fix.I also bought a 4020 side counsel with stuck engine that I knew had just been O.H.d on an estate sale.Told them it wasnt stuck as I could move flywheel but they sold it stuck and we pulled it about 5 ft and it was running. They had been trying to start it in 5th gear and wheels would just slide.

I think he's already deducted the cost of a rebuilt TA unit and at least some of the labor from the price. If that is a picture of the tractor, it's a solid $10,000 tractor here in Western NY *WITH* the bad TA.

As far as whether it will hold up, the answer is a solid MAYBE. Nothing is guaranteed. It could run for years. It could go out tomorrow. Regardless at $8000 it is a good buy. The American D360 engine is the better of the two that the tractor came with IMHO.

The tractor has had a Du Pont OVERHAUL, RED paint some places but not all, and white paint most places it belongs, but cheap decals, and looks like the rear rims & wheels and cast frt axle all not painted.
I wonder what the inside of the cab looks like? I actually think the Nuess D358 was a better engine, the D310 in a 756 would handle a turbo making 140 hp if you just pulled 756-sized implements faster, just think what the D358 would do! I do think engine parts for the D360 may be easier to find today than D358 parts.
