8n 12 volt conversion diagram ?

I just had the solenoid go out, went to auto advance parts, they gave me what looked like the one I had, well now after 10 minutes of running fine the alternator started smoking, any ideas ?...why, anyone have a diagram for how the wiring should be ?...is there a difference internally but not externally with a starter solenoid ?

Check to be sure the ammeter terminals are not shorted to the ammeter mounting bracket. Only a possibility as I see it, because I would actually expect some burnt wiring insulation if that were the case.

Also, I do not see a diode or idiot light in the blue (excite) wire from ign-acc to alt. Bob regularly points out good reason why this is risky to alternator health.

nuguy.........the original 3-terminal 8N's starter solenoid mounts onto of the starter with the itty-bitty middle terminal facing the engine block. The itty-bitty terminal is connect thru the dashpanel to the BIG starter push'em button next to the tranny shifter.

Some well meaning but un-knowledgeable autoparts guys try to sell a 4-terminal starter solenoid to unsuspecting electrically challenged nuguys claimin' "itt'll work" and it generally don't. The BIG starter push'em button "grounds" the starter solenoid as a tranny neutral safety scheme.

I know of 3-different 4-terminal automobile starter solenoids and only 1-WORKS in tractor application. And would you believe the original 6-volt 3-terminal starter solenoid works just fine on 12-volts? But I flunked mind reading (just ask my ex-wife of 32yrs) and I don't know which starter solenoid you have.

But stranger things have happened...........HTH, Dell, a 12-volt advocate for the right reason. That said; I know 8-ways convert to 12-volts and they all work, and NONE need or use a 4-terminal starter solenoid
