8N 12v conversion Resistor

1952 8N side mount 12 v conversion is the tractor.
ran perfect last year, parked it now this year wont" start.
Fuel is good.
Spark is weak.
I swapped the coil to my other 8N and it fired instantly so coil is good.
i have no amp, volt meter but do have a test light.
i checked the wires off the resistor and one to the coil was very weak .
i checked the spark from the wire from coil to distributor against the tractor iron and was getting a weak spark across 1/8" gap.
So I am assuming i have a resistor problem as the coil seems good, points open and close and light up on the test light, but so weak from the resisto.
Can eliminate my resistor if my coil is a 12 V?
i read the archives and seems i can, just want to make sure I do it right.
Any help you covuld give this dirt poor farmer would be really nice.
Thank you, god bless....

Yes you can replace the ballest resistor and coil with a 12v coil that has it's own built in resistor. Many people use the NAPA 1c14SB part number coil. It's what I have on my 8n

ou swapped coils and all was well, now swap resistors and see if problem moves with resistor.

I cannot find the resistor on the other one. These are round coils that are 12 V but they say "use with primary resistance wire or external resistor"
maybe the other one is wired without a resistor?
would a true 12 v coil not need the resistor?

jonallgrow........you report......"i checked the spark from the wire from coil to distributor against the tractor iron and was getting a weak spark across 1/8" gap".......gotta jump a full 3/16" gap with blue-snott authority.

You may have invisible corrosion on yer ignition points. Thattza $1 fix. You doubt? Clamp a dollarbill between yer points and pull it thru and POLISH them points cleanner'n'snott. Iff'n yer really cheap, tear a strip of heavy brown paper grocery bag and pull that strip thru yer points. Simple with 5-nipple sidemount distributor.

Byte the bullett, gitta NAPA IC14-SB, real 12v coil that uses NO RESISTOR EVER. $15 (cheap) and gitt rid of yer el-cheapo 12-to-6v converting resistor. Understand???? .......Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister

Thanks Guys!! I'm on my way to NAPA !!
canadian Napa usually does not stock the same stuff but I lucked out!!!
thanks again for your help. God Bless!!

hi.
i bought new coil as suggested.
installed and have voltage at + on coil and to the points .
voltage is reading 12 V from the + on the coil to the points.
I have NO spark.
I removed the resistor and still have no spark.
I have gapped points to .025, cleaned them witha $$ bill and nothing.
i had a spark at least with the old set up, it was just weak. now after following the changes mentioned i have no spark.
Please help.
I need this tractor badly and am running out of time.
Thank you kindly.
god Bless....

(quoted from post at 16:49:14 04/29/09) Dell, can you confirm that coil part number? The folks at Napa can't seem to find a "Napa IC14-SB."
The SB just means its a cheaper coil,,, what DIY'ers require,,, what JUNK NAPA has to sell to compete

Use just IC14,,, will cost $25 bucks more,,, for my money if i were to pay more I would use a IC64,,, it fits better in the bracket

NAPA mite not B the only show in town,,, other parts houses should B able to cross them numbers over to their line
