8N 1948 Carb problem

Sirs; I am having a problem with fuel draining straight out the bottom of the carb. I am a novice on this carb; it looks like it has a 1/8 inch hole produced in the bottom from the factory. How can I stop this leak? Thanks, Terry Armstrong

Terry that hole is so that the air cleaner does not fill with gas when the float sticks open or you flood the tractor. It sounds like your float has some crap in it and might be stuck in the open pos. Take the float bowl off and remove the float carefull not to bend the the float in any way and clean the needle and seat or replace.

Plow Boy 80, thanks for the quick reply. I bought a rebuild carb kit at Tractor Supply. If you look up thru the hole in the bottom, you can see all the way up thru the carb and see daylight. That doesn't sound right. When I had the carb apart, the floats didn't look out of align; the needle in the rebuild kit did not look like the one on it, so it didn't get replaced. The needle on the carb had a little round lip on the top and attached by a little bent piece of metal. The needle in the replacement package did not have any kind of lip around the top of it???

That's the problem. TSC isn't well thought of for N parts.

Get a kit from this site, nnalert's or nnalert Tractor.

Terry.......why does that surprize you??? that is the carb throat drain. Look closer, the 1/8-hole is set down innna 3/8" hole and is supposed to be "plugged" by a sinstered bronze filter (itty-bitty bronze balls pressed together) Many high powered carb soak cleaners "melt" the invisible glue holding the itty-bitty balls together.

Would it surprize you to learn that you can gitt this sinstered bronze filter from (byte my tongue) John Deere? J-D p/n: 95-78. It is really a Marvel/Schebler part. J-D tractors used many M/S carbs. Isn't that amazing???

When you re-install the sinstered bronze filter, you gently smack'um with appropriate sized drift. (think flathead of nail?)

Would you believe most float valves have a pointy tip??? As fer yer float valve: summ have a wire, summ don't. Summ have "vitron" (rubber) tip; summ don't. When you replace yer float valve, tighten the summb#ch tite or it will LEAK BEHIND the seat. Then "twirl" yer needle valve roundy-round to polish the seat and the needle. .......Dell

Rebuilding a carburetor is not as easy as it would appear. I have done several with various degrees of success. It all depends on what all is wrong with it. I have given up and now send any I want rebuilt to Gary (GB in MT) that post on this board. Gary has done enough Ford N tractor carburetor rebuilds that he knows what to look for and how to fix it. He also test the carburetor on his own tractor to make sure it operates properly before sending it back to you. It cost a few bucks but beats messing with it several times and still not having your tractor run correctly.
