8N 6v+ generator testing

How can I connect digital volt/ohm meter to test generator & voltage regulator charging system?

I have 1952 8N #8N496711 with 6 volt positive ground system. It runs fine.

Amp meter shows zero discharge standing. Slight discharge with key on, even greater with headlights on. Throttle up has no positive effect on amp meter.

6 month old NAPA 6 volt battery shows 6.17v DC at posts with motor running. Expect it isn"t getting charged.

What are simple volt/ohm meter tests of charging system, on tractor?

Check out the manual FO-4 repair manual (Think you canaccess on-line). Has some good info on the procedure to check the charging system. Sorry I cant help out anymore. In the process of moving, and my manual is packed away. good luck

Clem........unlike 12V alternators, 6V gennys do NOT charge at idle. You need a minimum of 1/3-throttle to make the 6V genny charge. You should read about 7.4-volts.

BE AWARE that digital meters do NOT like gennys 'cuz genny brushes make sparkies that the peak-hold detecter (thats a techical thingy) in the digital meter trys to read. Reading on the battery posts should be OK.

Remember the 6-volt mantra: "keep'em clean, brite'n'tite". You can have internal invisible corrosion INSIDE yer leaded battery clamp and the battery won't charge. The only cure is NEW heavy-duty 1/0 (one-ought) thick as yer thumb battery cable. Don't be fer gittin' some of them wimpy ferrin 12V battery cables. ......Dell

Get an analog meter at Wal-mart,it'll work fine for what you're testing.Attach the probes to the battery, rev up the motor as Dell said to about 1/3 throttle. You should see 7v+,if not, then check Vr,gen, for problems.Manual I&T-FO-4 helps,if you don't have one.---lha

Check out tip # 47. Unless you have a very expensive digital meter, it won't work on an N as others have said.

Don't just assume it's a bad generator. Follow the steps on the chart to find the problem.

Thanks, EXACTLY the help I needed. Simple, just needed the flow chart. Manual on it's way.

Finally, a reason to use the old Simpson 260 analog meter (or will 8N fry it too?)

Thanks, a lot,
Clem
