8N amp gauge

Hey everyone ! Question,I have an after market amp meter and want to hook it up to my 8N. It has a +L and +B. In simplest terms, what is +L and +B? For instance is it alternate and battery? The wiring is a mess so I know I'll require it at one point, probably this fall. Thanks for any info you give me!

RevJohn........this is a WAG (wild A$$ guess) yer 8N came from the factory 6-volt positive (+) ground. The original amp-meter was center ZERO (0) When ya gotta a plus (+) reading, ya was CHARGING yer battery. When ya gotta negative (-) reading, ya was discharging yer battery. As fer yer current replacement amp-meter. Make a WAG. Hooker up so one lead (B) is connected to the battery. Iff'n yer meter reads charge while yer engine is running, guess what??? Ya guessed correctly. Iff'n it don't, guess what??? Ya gotter bass-ackwards. Simple, eh? Remember, yer 8N's amp-meter is 20% accurate. When running, yer amp-meter shuld indicate about 3-amps charge (+).........HTH, Dell, yer self-appointed electrician and sparkie-meister

Dell it is 12 volt now. So B is battery. Where is L going? Ha! Guess I could touch it to every connection till I find it? Joking! Thank you sir!

oads. But it is actually loads plus alternator combined.

RevJohn..........ya dinna tell me yer 8N's been converted to 12-volts....BUT....non-the-less, amp-meter donna care, 6-volts...or...12-volts all it cares about is POLARITY. And I told you how to connect it correctly. Heres the rest of the deal, 6-volts or 12-volts, yer dashboard amp-meter is only 20% accurate. Think about it. Iff'n the speedometer in yer BelchFire-V8 was 20% accurate, you'd be all over the dealer, right??? 20% on dashboard amp-meter is about the width of yer meter needle. Kenn you read yer 8N's amp-meter that accurately??? I sure kent........ respectfully, Dell, former electronic calibration engr and flt test engr

You've got good advice here on both accounts. L for load.
If you hook it up and turn the lights on, assuming it has them,
with the engine not running, the gauge should show discharge.
If it shows charge, simply reverse the wires.

Wow, well can't tell you what the L or B actually stands for but I know how they wire up. The L side goes to the bottom of your fuse system mounted on the back side of your dash. The B side goes down to the starter switch on the right side. The other side goes directly to your start terminal. Use good 10 gauge red wire for both. They will be hot. It is not real hard to wire up these tractors. There are lots of diagrams online to help you or you can purchase a manual and they have a step by step process for you. Good luck with your 8N.

Well I have no fuse system....other words no fues block. I did a few fuses myself. Whoever wired it did not do a great job. One person said ," take the alternator wire that says battery, cut it into and put one on one side of the ampmeter and the other half that's cut on the other terminal. I sincerely apologize if I sound dumb on this.

f you do as you say above, you will measure only alternator current & it will never show load current (discharge/negative) reading.

JMOR thank you for the diagrams! I see the one wire goes to the starter with battery cable. The other wire would go to the terminal block, which I do not have. It has everything going to the switch. Someone installed a on-off switch.....yeah it's a mess. Lol! Should I hook the other wire to the switch? Thanks for all your advise! It is appreciated!

Not seeing a diagram of your wiring, based on description, I would say other wire to switch is probably correct for you.
