8n axle question

I finally got started working on a 8n I bought last year and was checking out the brakes to see if need adjusted or if they where covered in grease. Well they where covered so I checked for play in hub and had play every which way. So I pulled hub and axle and all the chunks and pieces that where once the bearings. But my question is when I took the nut off the axle the threads didn’t look full all the way to the end I was wandering if this is normal or should I be looking at replacing axle as well. The nut does seem to thread ok but not sure how it’s going to tighten. Also how tight will I be tightening this nut.

If the hub slides on past the end of the axle splines, the hub or
the axle or both are worn out. The nut is torqued to 450 lb/ft.
What year is your 8N? Earlier ones had one seal, later had two.

Don’t remember year I looked it up last year I do know it’s 5he front Mount distributor

Many times the reason the nut won't tighten up enough to keep
the hub tight on the axle splines is because one or the other is
worn. If that hub came off without a puller, odds are there's wear.

The threads on the inside/hub side of the axle is what I think you
are asking about since you said the nut threads on fine. Someone
may have damaged them trying to get it tighter. Can you post a pic?

I will take a pic tomorrow. I know I need new hubs theirs a lot of play in them and it is the threads on the end of the axle where you start the nut they don’t s seem very deep is what I’m trying to say

I would not be as worried about the threads at the end of the axle
since once you thread the nut on they will be in open air anyways.
As long as they aren't stopping you from threading the nut on and
getting the proper torque on it when reassembled.
If they do, or they are under the nut, then I would have more concern.

What you are striving for is full thread contact of the nut and washer. As Royce pointed out, it must also hold 450ft lbs of torque.

It isn't brain science or rocket surgery ;-) All you need is a piece of pipe, bathroom scale, and some long division.

I found one on ebay a few years ago for $100.00. Almost need two people though. One to read it and the other to bear down on the end of the thing.

225lb guy with a 2 foot lever should get you there. Be sure to retorque every 5-10 hours until it takes a set. Forget this and your new hubs will wear out again.
