8n bogging down under load

My '48 8n is a front distributor 6 volt system. I recently did a complete tune up and caanrb rebuild, and have recheked the points. When I have a mower on the engine and pto bog down, but it doesn't stall. The engine is hard to get started, but when running without the pto, it runs well. The only things I can think of is either the coil or the governor is out of adjustment. I had the governor apart and the balls look fine, no flat spots. Anybody with a suggestion?

Good chance that it's running lean after the carb rebuild. When bogging down give it some choke and see if it straightens out. If so, adjust your main jet accordingly and you should be good to go.

Check spark first off. You need a good blue/white spark that will jump a 1/4 inch gap or more. Then go on the the carb but most of the time on the N series spark is more likely then carb problems or of course engine compression which if low will cause problems not matter what spark or carb does

Most instructions say 1 turn out to start on both adjustments. If you leave them like that,it will run just like you describe.Open the main [big] screw 2 turns ,idle about 1/4 turn,adjust for fastest idle,in for rich out for lean.check timing order-1243 ccw,many[including myself] have made this common mistake.The motor will start and run surprisingly well like this,but will have no power.---lha

Not much to adjust on a coil.

But don't worry, it's neither one.

Hard to start & bogs down under load may be the carb adjustment; that's easy enough to try.

When you had the distributor off to check the points, did you set the timing? Incorrect timing could cause it to be hard to start AND bog down under load.

Just a few things come to mind...

They say it is easy for the points to slip. Worth checking again.

Also, it is easy to get spark plug wires 3 & 4 reversed. The tractor will idle fine, but have no power.

Lastly, when you did the carb, did you clean/replace the secret fuel screen in the inlet elbow? If it is gunked up, it will do what you describe.

I have checked the points and they are fine. I cleaned the screan out by the elbow very well. I will check wires 3 and 4.

I did set the timing, and I know there isn't an adjustment for the coil. I will play with the carb a little more, but adjusting the screws doesn't seem to make any changes. I did look at your 50 tips, thanks for adding that, it will be useful.
