8N Brake Finally

After making several post on here about the brake locking up. I finally put a new axle on the right side and that fixed my brake issue. I used the same hub ( which had been replaced). I had even put washers behind the brake drum (tried a couple of these also) to space it out farther, but it was still dragging. I was feed up and finally ordered a axle and put it in. It was still up on the blocks when I climbed up in the seat and pushed on the pedal. The pedal even pushed different. Shredded the road ditch, shredded some corn stalks, drug the drive way and used the brake and it never once even thought about grabbing. FINALLY. One question I have is
When I installed flat washers between the brake drum and the hub, the brake would still want to drag, but when I put the new axle in it didn"t- both processes spaced the brake drum out- but why did only replacing the axle work (same hub). (The threads showing on the axle by the nut was reduced by about 2 threads- about the same thickness as the washers I used)- No the washers are not on the wheel hub now, I know that is not the proper fix. I was using washers as a test. I am glad it worked, but don"t understand why the washers didn"t fix it.

The washers only repositioned the drum, they did nothing to fix the real problem with worn splines on the shaft that would not allow the hub to tighten up properly. IMHO

I understand the splines wore on the shaft, but the hub was tight on the shaft- not sloppy. So by putting the new axle in, it slid the hub out, which is fastened to the brake drum, which moved the brake drum out which is the exact same thing the washers did to the brake drum slid it out- I fought this long enough I would like to know why the axle fixed the problem but the washers didn"t.

I am just guessing at this point but I wonder how concentric the worn splines are on the old shaft. maybe the hub was tight, but a bit out of alignment with the shaft? Just thinking! mount a hub on old shaft and use some vee blocks and dial indicator and check it out?

I am wanting to wonder if the end play on the bearing was set wrong somehow. I have a hard time understanding since there is not a preload , but a call for two to six thousandths end play. That would be hard to measure. Anyway there are some shims at the end of the axle housing for end play adjustment.

Interesting thought about the splines not being true on the old shaft. I will have to check that out. Thanks for the idea.
