8n challenge

I have an 8n that has an interesting problem. It's had a complete tune up including points, plugs, condenser, new plug wires and a carb cleaning. It runs great.....for about 45 seconds and then dies. It almost acts like it runs out of gas, but there is gas in the carb and the fuel is flowing as it should. It just stops running. If I wait a couple of minutes, it starts right up and purrs like a kitten....and dies again after about 45 seconds. Any ideas?

IF the carb is really full of gas, it would run on that for close to two minutes. Don't be fooled by removing carb drain plug and seeing a flow of gas. Sometimes a screen or valve restriction will flow a tiny trickle and over time put gas in carb, but inadequate flow. To verify, remove that drain plug and see if flow will fill a pint bottle in 2 minutes or less.

Just to clarify what JMOR said, remove the plug at the bottom of the carburetor. Your problem sure sounds like fuel flow. If it were an ignition component breaking down, I don't think it would start back up after just a two minute wait. But the ignition switch can be tested easily by just bypassing it with a jumper wire and a couple of alligator clips.

My 9N was acting the same. I jumpered the key switch and it ran great. She's sporting a new key switch now and I haven't had the issue since.
