bought a 52 8n with ser.# starts with 4.battery was dead.put a new battery in it.hooked it up pos.ground.changed the pos to neg coil wires around.doesn't charge.dont know if it charged before i bought it.put a new regulator in it.polarized the generator by touching batt + arm terminals at the regulator.still doesn't charge.i also read that you can touch the batt + field wires.didn't do it.afraid i might fry something.took the generator apart.looks ok.cleaned brushes and armeture.wiring looks ok.is there something i am missing?any charging system diag for this?

Well founded fear..........that would smoke the regulator field control section.

as jmor said. on this A circuit gen and regulator had you jumped bat to field you would have smoked the 40$ regulator.

Try a motor test.

remove belt, jump bat to arm, ground field.

if gen spins.. it should charge.

post back.

JMOR - do you have a similar schematic for a 48 8N with the side mount distributor? It looks like it would be really handy.

Thanks,
Mark

48 side mount? I always thought the first side mounts came out in 1950.

es, that is what is posted above & why I never posted a different version.

been busy.just got time this weekend to fool with the tractor somemore.swiched everything back to neg.ground.checked all grounds.did generator test.gen spins.found that new regulator was bad.put another regulator on and it charges good.ampmeter reads discharge.is this due to the neg.ground?should i make it pos ground?thanks for the help
Fran

positive ground is correct. if this is a front mount go to positive ground and repolarize the genny.. if it is a side mount.. it doesn't matter.. just fix the ammeter (swap wires ), and them make sure coil is setup correctly
