8N Coil confusion

I have an 8N side mount distributor.
I want to replace the old distributor with the new one that I purchased.

It has two low taps and the high voltage tap. The taps are marked + and - Does it make a difference with one goes to the distributor?

Also how do I know if I have a resistor in the circuit. If there is one where is it. If I have one I can trace to leads to it, so it is in between which two points or more (what does it connect to).

Tractor was running great before I ran it (front end loader) into a small tree and stalled the 8N. Now it won't start anymore.

Sounds crazy but I find it hard to believe that something came loose when I hit that tree.

I'm getting a spark devise shortly to see if there is any. Motor turns with no problems, it just won't catch.

+/- makes no real difference, will run equally well either way, but........if you want it 'according to Hoyle', then distributor side will be same (+/-) as grounded side (+/-) of battery. A resistor, if present will be in wire between ign switch and coil (not distributor side, but other small coil terminal).

Thanks, without the coil electrical diagram, I wasn't sure about the plus / minus marking. I'll go look to see if I have a resistor there.

Normally a 6 volt side mount distributor system will not have a resistor. 12 volt would if you had a 6 volt coil, but not if you have 12 volt coil.
