8N CONDUCTOR COPPER STRIP

I have tracked my most recent 52 8N side mount no start problem to the stud at the dist. Little to no spark at points when I opened and closed them manually with key on. Have 6.33 volts both sides of key switch with key on (6.33 batt side and 0 coil side key off)and both sides of coil and when I took the wire off the dist from coil had 6.33 at the terminal where it connects to dist. When I reconnected the coil wire at dist had 0 points opened or closed. Took a look at wire that had been used to replace the copper strip as well as the terminal yep the wire was half off or barely connected and the insulation at the terminal was sliced as well grounding out my sparkies.
Ordered new conductor strip and insulator and terminal screw from Just 8n"s. Question is since I don"t have a copper strip how is it installed?

Oh by the way. It was easy to remove the stud bolt with the dist on the tractor just had to be careful and take the point plate off and line up the weights right there is enough room to take the screw out with needle nose pliers.

Unless I misunderstood what you said (and it wouldn't be the first time) it sounds to me that you have ordered the copper strip.

Got the Master Parts catalog? Look at page 150 to ID the parts.

The copper strip, 12209, screw 350032-S, 12233 bushing & 12234 insulator are the 4 parts you need. Perhaps you're thinking that the copper strip on the points is a separate part.....??

" Maybe for you it is! I think it's a lot easier to just pull the distributor. And, if you drop a screw in it, that's exactly what you will be doing!

Bruce,

Yeah I ordered all those parts from just 8n's figured they were all shot as well. The wire from the stud to the points was a good feet of engineering as it couldn't have been more than 1/2 inch long. How they got that done is beyond me. I knew this wire was there from when I changed points a couple of years ago but didn't change it as it was running and figure if it aint broke don't fix it. Well I've had 3 yrs of it working but looking back it's been very tempremental.

Part number 12209 will replace the wire.

Yea, it always amazes me how a 10 cent fix & 3 hours of work turns out. If my hay was down & a storm coming, I'd fix it just like that. Then I'd order the parts & fix it right.

Given your scenario I'd just go and run the wire directly to the points stud and out the dist to the coil. That would get the job done. Still hope someone has a pic of how the strip connects to the stud in the dist and to the points. From looking at the part pic the square end probably goes to the dist stud and the other end connects to the points.

My 8N was rigged with a wire in it instead of the copper strip as well. I ran it for eight years like that. That wire finally shorted out. I have an FEL on my 8N so rather than try to deal with it in there, I just pulled the distributor.

Glad I did because when I pulled it I discovered that there was too much play in the shaft. Distributors are cheap enough so I just ordered a new one. It came came complete with cap, points and condenser ready to stick right into the hole.

The only thing was that it came with points that had the white plastic rubbing block so I changed them to a good set with the phenolic block.

The tractor's running fine and I still have the original dist. in case I want to rebuild it.

Huh the condenser on mine is connected to the stud on the points along with that wire that was on it instead of the copper strip. Still hope to find a pic of the proper way to hook that up when the parts
arrive.

Home Depot sells a square of copper flashing.About 8x8, used to cost 1.00.Make the holes for the screws with a leather punch.Dont think you can drill holes in thin copper. No terminals needed with the flat copper.

Pics didn't upload, I'll try again
