8N cooling system

I recently purchased a 1948 8N, front distributer. I checked the coolant and it really needs to be replaced, and soon because of the cold weather setting in where I live. I have a manual on order but am thinking about flushing the radiator now. Any tips or suggestions? Also, I don't have a t-stat and am going to install one. From looking at past messages I see that 160* and 180* ones both work well. Any suggestions as to which might work better in a colder climate? I don't run the tractor for long periods at a time either. Thanks in advance...

Steve........50-50 anti-freeze and enny thermostat in radiator hoze next to the cylinder head neck. 160* is eazier to find, pointy end facing radiator. Remember, the thermostat is for engine NOT for warming YOU. (grin) .......Dell

I cleaned my radiator/block cooling system this summer befor start up/rebuild. I took my propane dry-wall heater and got some water to couple hundred degrees and did a continuas circulation for about 3 times till the water cooled [engine running]. A cheap flush to find out what was stored in there. Then you could do a storebought flush if you think it would help. Probably not. Remember that water tank is 60yrs old [I'm 60yrs old and my tank is cloggin']. I think 180 would be better for winter running, and running longer each time.

I use the 180* t-stats in all of my N's simply because 3 of the 4 never get run for long periods of time. I want the engine to get to operating temp quick & stay there. If this site doesn't have the 180* t-stats, nnalert's does. You will need to lube it w/ soap & push hard to get it in the hose as it is larger than the OEM 160* t-stat.

When I flush my cooling system,I drain antifreeze, fill with white vinegar and water 1/2&1/2 and run until good and warm, then drain by removing bottom hose. While the hose is off,you can wrap a rag around a water hose to fit it into the rad.hose, open and flush.when rad. is clear, reverse and flush motor.---lha
