8N differential lock

I have a 49 8N I beleive. The problem is somehow both rear wheels are pulling now like a differential lock has been applied and cant steer. I have searched and dont see any levers to dis-engage. I could see something happening and loosing posi-traction but to gain it all of a sudden. HELP

No differential locks in 8ns.Look for cracks or broken spider gears.Should be able to see thru the fill hole with a flashlite.

I would pull at least one axle and look at the inside end of it. I"ve seen where the 2 axle ends were rubbing on the inside because the bearing prload shims weren"t installed correctly. A set of axles I just pulled out of a 1949 8n were rubbing together quite badly - though i"m not quite too sure that it could cause enough heat to weld them together...

Back years ago my dads 2N did the same thing,it was the spider gears. It wouldnt turn very well but it got excellent traction.

The differential gears or the cross shafts are broken.

Remove the left side trumpet housing. Not the right side. Then you can remove the differential housing and separate it into two halves to see what you need to repair it.

If it still has the rivets holding the two halves together you will need a cutting torch to get them out. You can get a bolt kit to replace them when it is re assembled.

Thanks everybody, looks like the consensus is something went wrong in the rear. The only funny thing is I would have never figured something to break(happen) and then you get posi-traction.
